SLSA Annual Conference 2027

The next SLSA annual conference will be held November 18-21, 2027, in Washington, DC concurrently with the History of Science Society annual conference: Josh DiCaglio and Dawna Schuld of Texas A&M are planning the 2027 SLSA meeting in collaboration with HSS organizers. Conference registrants will have access to both conferences, with a shared conference hotel (the Omni Shoreham) and some shared activities; SLSA sessions will be held at the hotel and at the Texas A&M location in Washington, DC, which is conveniently located near the National Mall. The SLSA theme will be “Habitability,” although proposals for other SLSA-related topics will also be considered. A call for paper with the likely deadline of late March 2027 and including details about submission will be circulated soon. Given the constraints of conference planning, the deadline will not be extended.

2025 Annual Meeting of SLSA: Risk

Distinct from danger, which is seen as inchoate and incalculable, risk carries with it the notion of statistical, probabilistic, or otherwise enumerated legibility, and the costs and benefits of prospective courses of action are given the narrative authority of mathematical language. But even as risk posits itself as a rational approach to considerations of the future, it ignores the mythology of its own construction: risk is, as its critics note, always a process of storytelling.
