TT Assistant Professor in Digital Studies, Univ of Mary Washington

I am writing to share a tenure-track job opportunity (pasted below) to join me in the Department of Communication and Digital Studies at the University of Mary Washington. The top-line is “digital media production” (by which we mean video, audio, web, games, or anything else), but the secondary ability to teach core classes in digital studies is also really important. I’m chairing the search committee, so please send me any questions: zwhalen@umw.edu.

The University of Mary Washington invites applications for an assistant professor (tenure-track) in digital media production starting in the Fall 2022 semester to contribute to the major in Communication and Digital Studies.

The successful candidate should have substantial professional and/or research experience in multimedia production — including video, audio, animation, web, or interactive media  — as well as significant teaching experience. Experience in digital studies, digital humanities or a similar approach to understanding, analyzing, and using media critically is strongly preferred. The candidate should be prepared to teach introductory and advanced courses in digital studies (including Introduction to Digital Studies and Applied Digital Studies) as well as create new courses in digital media production. Highly qualified candidates will be able to demonstrate teaching experience and a commitment to teaching in an inclusive environment that embraces diverse talents and backgrounds. We especially seek candidates whose areas of specialization will help amplify the university’s focus on a diverse and inclusive curriculum that meets the needs of our changing student demographic. The successful candidate will teach courses that support our major in communication and digital studies, our minors in digital studies and journalism, as well as other disciplines where digital media is emerging as a critical component of the discipline.

The candidate must either have earned a Ph.D. or terminal degree in a closely related field or ABD with substantial progress toward completing her/his dissertation. The Ph.D. is required for continuation in a tenure-track appointment. Passionate teachers in all subdisciplines of digital studies will be considered.  Successful applicants will demonstrate an enthusiasm for teaching at the undergraduate level, the ability to teach a variety of digital studies topics, and an interest in involving undergraduates in research. The normal teaching load is 3-4 sections per semester in small classes.

Faculty are expected to engage in scholarly/professional development; perform service in support of the students, the program, and the institution; and be committed to continuous curricular enhancement in response to changing workplace needs and expectations. Candidates must also have effective oral and written communication skills.

For additional information and to apply for this position, please visit https://careers.umw.edu.  Candidates are required to complete a Commonwealth of Virginia application and are also asked to electronically submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, research statement, contact information for three references, and a teaching portfolio that could include a teaching philosophy, sample syllabi, sample assignments, teaching observations or student evaluations and feedback. Letters of reference and transcripts will be requested for finalists.

Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2021.  The University of Mary Washington accepts only completed online applications.  Faxed, mailed, or e-mailed applications will not be considered.

In a continuing effort to enrich its academic environment and provide equal educational and employment opportunities, the University of Mary Washington actively encourages women, minorities, disabled individuals, and veterans to apply. Successful candidates must demonstrate teaching experience and excellence in teaching in an inclusive environment that embraces diverse talents and backgrounds.
