The First Copernican is the first biography in English of 
Copernicus's only student, Georg Joachim Rheticus. Rheticus is a 
fascinating character not only because he launched the work of 
Copernicus and founded modern trigonometry, but also because of his 
colorful family history (e.g., his father was beheaded), his religion 
(Wittenberg Protestant, with a documented conversion experience), and 
his sexuality (he fled into exile after being charged with sodomizing
