Subject: dean position announcement
I know this is a little odd for this list, but I'm thinking that some
of you might know qualified individuals interested in this position.
We have a strong Science and Technology Studies graduate program and
a large and vibrant English dept. with a new PhD program coming on
board next year, in Rhetoric and Writing (broadly construed). In
addition, the college is adding a doctoral program focusing on
interdisciplinary studies in social, political, economic, and
cultural theory. Virginia Tech is a large comprehensive university
with 8 colleges (Agriculture, Natural Resources, Business,
Engineering, Vet Med, Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, Science, and
Architecture and Urban Studies) that is trying to both maintain the
land grant mission and propel itself into the group of top 30
research universities in the country. (I know, I know, like everyone
else. Still . . .) For anyone interested, there are wonderful
things about this place, not the least of which are the cadets who
drill outside my building in the late afternoons. We think of them
as mascots . . . in camo. Bernice Hausman
Position Announcement: Dean of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University known as Virginia
Tech, invites nominations or expressions of interest for the position
of Dean, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences .
Virginia Tech is the senior land grant university in the Commonwealth
of Virginia with approximately 21,600 full-time undergraduates and
6,300 graduate students enrolled both on- and off-campus throughout
the state. The university's strategic plan sets ambitious goals to
increase Virginia Tech's stature as one of the nation's leading

About the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences:
The College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences encompasses scholarly
programs in the Arts, Humanities, Social and Human Sciences, and
Education. These programs focus on the nature and expression of the
human condition from the multiple perspectives of the liberal arts
and professional fields of human sciences and education. With
increasing attention to the global community, the college studies the
interaction of policies and practices with individuals, families,
communities, and societies. The creation, promotion, and influence of
cultures and values on those interactions are the primary focus of a
number of departments, research centers, and individual faculty members.
The College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences was formed in 2003 by
the merger of two colleges. It consists of 13 departments and the
School of Education: Apparel, Housing, and Resource Management;
Communication; English; Foreign Languages and Literatures; History;
Human Development; Interdisciplinary Studies; Music; Philosophy;
Political Science; Science and Technology in Society; Sociology; and
