Dear Colleagues,

I=92m sending this query to three different lists, so apologies in=20
advance for any cross postings.

Some of you undoubtedly know of Robert Osserman, whose best known=20
written work outside of professional mathematical circles is a=20
wonderful book called Poetry of the Universe (about geometry and=20
cosmology). He has recently contacted me with a query I=92d like to
put=20=

out to the greater collective literary, astronomical, and historical=20
knowledge of this list:

=93Do you know of literary references--poetry or prose--where the
author=20=

describes the starry sky at night? I would appreciate any leads you=20
could give me. (I am also interested in visual depictions, should you=20
happen to know of any paintings--besides the obvious Van Gogh -- of
the=20=

same subject).=94

I=92ve offered to collect responses any of you might be willing to
send=20=

me, and to forward them to Bob for his use.

Thanks for the help!

Dennis Danielson

David H. Levy has compiled many instances of heavenly poetry in his book
Starry Night: Astronomers and Poets Read the Sky (New York: Prometheus
Books, 2001). Levy, incidentally, is currently working on a doctoral
dissertation that largely examines the allusions Shakespeare makes of
the night sky.
