Has anyone compiled a decent collection of movies representing images of
=
the future? Everything from Blade Runner to Woody Allen's Sleeper? It
=
seems that someone (many people, probably) have and I'm out of touch. =
Can anyone help? I will be using a collection of clips for my history =
of technology class, in a section about the history of the future. I =
saw Phoebe Sengers's quite interesting and useful syllabus on just that
=
subject posted at the SLSA page, but didn't see any references to =
movies.

Neuroscience
and Society Network
¬
A
forum for social studies of the new brain sciences

We are currently seeking
individuals who would be interested in participating in the
Neuroscience and Society Network (NSN), a new¬ forum¬ for those
investigating the¬ social, economic, and political
implications¬ of the¬ contemporary¬ brain
sciences.¬
¬ ¬ ¬
Despite evidence that the
neurosciences are changing our understandings of personal and social
life, and predictions that these transformations will intensify in
coming years, the social study of these fields of biomedicine has
received only marginal attention. The Neuroscience and Society Network
has been formed in order to provide a venue in which doctoral students
and junior researchers working on issues related to the neurosciences
(e.g. psychopharmacology, behavioural
genetics, biological psychiatry, neuroimaging, neuroethics) can
exchange and develop ideas.¬
¬
The objectives of¬ the¬ NSN
are:¬

  To foster
multi-disciplinary engagement with developments in the neurosciences,
drawing on the perspectives of scholars from the fields of sociology,
anthropology, philosophy, psychology,¬ history,¬ legal
studies and medicine.¬

  To facilitate and
organize¬ symposiums for the
sharing of research into the neurosciences, the self and society¬
  To promote transnational
collaboration¬ among¬ junior
researchers¬

At the moment, we are
particularly focusing on two projects:¬

1.¬ The development of a website that¬ can enable¬ individuals
interested in these issues to identify and
communicate with one another.¬
  ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ The
NSN website can be found at:
http://www.lse.ac.uk/collections/neuroscienceAndSocietyNetwork/.
In addition to providing information about the NSN, its
activities and related events, the website features a directory in
which individuals¬ (both students and
faculty) can register their interests and contact information
(please visit the website to do so). The website also contains
information on how to sign up to the neuro-listserv, a mailing list for
discussions relevant to the NSN.¬ ¬ ¬
  ¬
  2.¬ The organization of¬ the
first of what we hope will become an annual symposium on
Neuroscience and Society.¬ The symposium¬ will take¬ place¬ on
September 10,¬
2005, and will¬ be held at the
London School of Economics.¬ ¬ Details¬ about the symposium, as well
as a
call for papers, will be available on the NSN website¬ soon.¬

We look forward to
hearing from individuals who would¬ like¬ to hear¬ more about NSN,
and
especially those who would like to become members of a steering group
that directs the network?Äô?Ñ?¥s organization and activity.¬¨ For more
information, please contact Linsey¬ (l.j.mcgoey@lse.ac.uk) or
Scott¬ (s.vrecko@lse.ac.uk).¬ ¬ ¬
