CFP: Proposal for a panel for the ASLE (Association for the Study of 
Literature and Environment) conference to be held in Eugene, Oregon,
June 
21-25 on the work of Lynn Margulis and Dorian Sagan.

John Bruni and Karl Zuelke will be proposing paper presentations on the
work 
of Margulis and Sagan and we would like to invite one or two others to
join 
us in forming a panel proposal.  These papers might address the new 
biological and ecological paradigms that Margulis and Sagan develop, or
they 
may refer to Margulis and Sagan??s work in the context of any number of 
ecocritical approaches??Gaia, Deep Ecology, ecosystem relationships, 
organismal and genetic transference, and anything else.  Contact Karl
Zuelke 
karl_zuelke@mail.msj.edu or John Bruni John.Bruni@sdsmt.edu with your
idea 
and we??ll discuss it.  We??re looking forward to forming a panel that
engages 
with these intriguing thinkers.

MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGIST

DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY
THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL

The Department of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill seeks to hire a medical anthropologist, preferably at the
rank of Associate or advanced Assistant Professor.  Areas of particular
interest include social studies of medicine, ethnography of medical
institutions and sciences, comparative healing systems, anthropology of
sickness, anthropology of the body, and critical medical anthropology. 
We also welcome biocultural approaches to issues of health and the
biology of poverty.  We favor candidates with innovative approaches who
can contribute to and bridge the research themes within our department.
Geographic region is open, but field experience, a comparative focus
and an interest in global networks and processes are all desirable. 
Demonstrated teaching skills are a high priority.

The Anthropology Department currently has 26 regular faculty members,
organized into three overlapping concentrations (Anthropology of
Meaning, Social Systems, and Ecology and Evolution) and two programs
(Medical Anthropology and Archaeology), as well as informal working
groups such as Culture, Environment, and Health; Science, Technology and
Society; and Social Movements.  Faculty teach two courses per semester
and are expected to engage actively in both research and graduate and
undergraduate training.  We encourage applicants to examine the

information about the program, as well as current faculty and student

Chapel Hill offers a variety of attractive resources for the kind of
scholar we seek. In addition to a collegial and stimulating research and
teaching environment within the Department itself, the University.  The
UNC community features programs and institutes that provide many
opportunities for cooperation and exchange in relation to this position,
including the Department of Social Medicine at the Medical School, the
Center for Global Health at the School of Public Health, the University
Center for International Studies, the Program in Cultural Studies, the
Carolina Population Center and the Odum Institute for Research in Social
Science.  The wider area also includes nearby Duke University in Durham
(with which UNC maintains several joint programs), as well as North
Carolina State University in Raleigh, and the National Humanities Center
and other institutes in Research Triangle Park.  UNC campus libraries
are excellent and are coordinated with those at Duke and NC State.
