CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS=0D
(see http://www.iastate.edu/~ceah/genome_project.html for more info)
=0DThe Iowa State University Center for Excellence in the Arts and =
Humanities, in collaboration with the Center for Integrated Animal =
Genomics, calls for submissions to an anthology of powerful, original =
creative writing responding to the field of animal and human genomics. =
=0D=0DPROJECT DESCRIPTION=0DEver since Eve ate from the apple of the =
tree of knowledge and was forced from the Garden of Eden, humans have =
been tinkering with the science of creation and dealing with the =
consequences of it. Genetics is the science of heredity, and its modern
=
application is the field of genomics-the science of DNA sequencing and =
the technologies associated with understanding and manipulating the =
genetic code. Today scientists are sequencing the genomes of many =
species, including those of the chimp, dog, cow, chicken, pig, mouse, =
and even the human. Understanding the underlying DNA or genetic code =
offers the opportunity to revolutionize medicine and alter the animals =
that are our companions as well as the animals we depend on for food. =
=0D=0DHowever, just as science has advanced, so have our concerns as =
humans about the role science plays in our lives. Contemporary writings,
=
such as Ira Levin's Boys from Brazil, Roger Shattuck's Forbidden =
Knowledge: From Prometheus to Pornography, Matt Ridley's Genome, and =
films, such as The Fly and Attack of the Clones, have addressed the =
human ability to clone individuals and manipulate the genetic code, =
often producing less than desirable results. =0D=0DThe proposed =
anthology will explore through a body of creative work how science =
overlaps with social values in the rapidly expanding area of animal =
genomics. The project is intended to be an expression of how scientific
=
discovery-and practices-can inspire and energize the ideas of the writer
=
in the twenty-first century.=0D=0DDEADLINE=0D=0DSeptember 1, 2005 =
(receipt deadline)=0D=0DSUBMISSION GUIDELINES =0D=0DSubmissions for this
=
anthology should address or be inspired by the impact of genetic and =
genomics research on all aspects of animal and human life and culture. =
The editors are soliciting poems, short stories, essays, and works of =
creative nonfiction that respond to the role of human and animal =
genomics in society and the outcomes and concerns such research =
produces. Both traditional and experimental writing will be considered =
for inclusion. =0D=0DAll submissions should be typed in a 12-point font
=
with double line spacing. Attach a cover sheet that includes the =
author's name, address, daytime phone number, and email address to the =
first page of each work. Submissions should not exceed 30 manuscript =
pages; for poetry, please send no more than 5 poems.=0D=0DSubmissions =
should be original, unpublished works, although in rare circumstances =
the editors may choose to reprint an exceptional piece. For submissions
=
of previously published work, provide full bibliographic information for
=
the original publication as well as contact information for the rights =
manager.=0D=0DSubmissions should be accompanied by a brief cover letter
=
that includes a one-paragraph author bio. =0D=0DMail two copies of =
materials to: =0D=0DSheryl St. Germain=0DIowa State University=0DCenter

=
IA 50011-2036=0D=0D=0D=0D=0D=0DEmail submissions will not be =
accepted.=0D=0DWorks will not be returned. Authors and poets will be =
contacted by email in late fall 2005 regarding the results. The speed =
with which decisions are made will depend largely on the number of =
submissions received. =0D

CFP: Roundtable discussion on =93Ecocriticism and Science Studies=94 =
for the ASLE (Association for the Study of Literature and Environment) =
conference to be held in Eugene, Oregon, June 21-25.
Deadline for proposals: Thursday, January 20, 2005.
I would like to coordinate a roundtable discussion on the conflicts, =
intersections, and alliances between ecocriticism and science studies.
=
How can specific questions, approaches, and paradigms from science =
studies complicate and enrich ecocriticism? What can ecocriticism =
contribute to science studies? How well do specific concepts--such as =
the agency of nature, or biodiversity=97travel between ecocriticism and
=
science studies? These are only initial questions; I welcome a wide =
range of perspectives on the current as well as the potential relations
=
between ecocriticism and science studies and expect that the =
participants will redefine the questions.
Please email a one-paragraph or one-page abstract of a 10- minute =
presentation. The roundtable discussion will probably include 3=965 =
presenters. Please include a title, your institutional affiliation, and
=
contact information. Audio-visual requests must accompany the proposal.
=
(No attachments, please.) Participation at the ASLE conference is =
limited to one presentation per person (but you may chair one session =
and present at another). All presenters must be ASLE members by the =
start of the conference (presenters should be, but are not required to =
be, members of SLSA as well). All proposals must be received be =
Thursday, January 20, 2005 to be considered.
Please email your proposal to Dr. Stacy Alaimo, ASLE's Liaison to the =
SLSA: stacya@exchange.uta.edu.
