Hello all,

As some of you are no doubt aware, I am organizing a discussion of what
has 
become known as the "Steve Kurtz Case" at the upcoming SLSA meeting.

For more on Critical Art Ensemble, the collective to which Kurtz belongs

and whose texts have generated much of the government's indictments of
his 
artistic practice, please see , where, among

Once again, I would like to extend an invitation to all interested to 
attend this informal discussion of the issues surrounding the case and 
their ramifications for those of us who operate at the borders of 
traditional disciplines and call into question the notion of "bona fide 
research practices."

I am pleased to announce that joining us for the discussion will be
Julie 
Perini, an MFA student in the Media Studies Department at the University
at 
Buffalo and a collaborator of Kurtz's.  She has had direct experience
with 
the ongoing FBI investigation and was subpoenaed to testify before a
grand 
jury regarding her relationship to Kurtz and his projects.  I have put 
online an article she wrote for a UB graduate publication, which you can

In addition to Ms. Perini's input,I will briefly introduce the topic and

another UB graduate student, who is also an emergency medical technician
in 
Buffalo, will be on hand to discuss the city's response to the situation

and the events that led to the investigation's inclusion of federal 
authorities.  Rather than delivering an analysis of the event, my goal
is 
to generate a discussion of the potential impact of the case.  Your 
participation will be greatly appreciated.

Note: unfortunately I will be unable to provide lunch.  My hope was that

this could be a "brown bag" affair, but the hotel catering staff has 
informed me that outside food is not allowed on the premises.  While the

catering options are no doubt reasonable insofar as such things go, as a

graduate student I am unable to front the money for boxed lunches for an

unknown number of people.  I realize that this may make the meeting 
problematic, but I hope that we can have a worthwhile discussion in 45 
minutes to an hour, leaving some time for people to grab a bite to eat 
before the afternoon sessions.  Alternatively, we might be able to find
a 
restaurant suitable for our purposes, although I have not met with any 
success with this approach from afar.  (As of now the plan is to hold
the 
meeting in the room where we will have the business lunch on Saturday.)

Despite this obstacle, I hope you find time to familiarize yourself with

this important matter and to come to the discussion ready to express
your 
thoughts.
