Penn State invites applications and nominations for the Josephine Berry
Weiss Chair in the Humanities. The successful candidate will be a
scholar
with outstanding accomplishments in research and teaching who is
eligible
for an appointment in one or more of the humanities departments within
the
College of the Liberal Arts. The College would be pleased to make joint
appointments for a successful candidate with interests bridging fields.

istrlst/inst/welcome.html]; and the Rock Ethics Institute
[http://rockethics.psu.edu/] is a plus, but
candidates in any humanities field will be considered. We are especially
interested in candidates who bring breadth to the position and will work
with colleagues to further strengthen the humanities at Penn State.
Candidate's scholarly record should be commensurate with a named
professorship in a research I university. Teaching load will be three
courses per year. Salary is competitive and commensurate with
qualifications, and the chair is accompanied by an annual research fund.
The committee will begin screening applications on November 15. Please
send
application letter, curriculum vitae, and the names of three references
to:
Karen L. Connelly, Administrative Assistant, Search Committee, The
Pennsylvania State University, 111 Sparks Building, Box LS, University
Park,
PA 16801. Applications should be received by November 15, 2004, however,
all applications will be considered until the position is filled.

[....] a special issue we have recently published in
Studies in History and Philosophy of Biological and Biomedical Sciences
entitled 'The Brain in a Vat'.
This volume is a series of articles tracing the uniquely pervasive =
metaphor
of the brain in a vat in history, philosophy, neuroscience, medicine,
art,
and digital culture. The issue looks at the roles of the disembodied
brain
in the sceptical arguments of analytical philosophy, in the development
of
artificial intelligence, and in the promises of immortality held out by
cryonics. It considers the enduring theme of brains without bodies in
science fiction and its varied manifestations, from nineteenth-century
surrealism to modern cyberpunk. A unique analysis, including the work of
major visual artists, of modern and historical metaphors of mind and =
brain.
