Theatres of Science:

crossovers and confluences

An Interdisciplinary Conference

University of Glamorgan

Pontypridd, Wales, UK

8-11 September 2004

Call for Papers and Workshops

The 'Theatres of Science' conference will address some of the many
exciting

and innovative ideas and practices taking place at the intersections
between

drama/theatre and science.

We are concerned with an eclectic field ranging from plays about
scientific

issues, to theatrical biography, from public dissections to scientific

lecture-demonstrations, from performance art interrogating science to
drama in science

museums, amongst many others. Key questions are: how can different
knowledge

systems and ways of understanding and/or describing the world be
brought into

confluence or conflict to produce new meanings, insights and
experiences? What

are key approaches, challenges and obstacles in arts/science
collaborations?

How are we to conceptualise notions of science and/as performance?

The focus for papers and workshops is likely to include - but is not
limited

to - areas such as:

* Plays dealing with scientific issues, themes, histories and
personalities

* Performance that engages with, is inspired by, or challenges
science

* Collaborations between artists and scientists

*   Science as performance

* Radio & Television drama and science

*   Science on film

*   Ethics and Experimentation

*   Drama/Theatre, Science and Education

*   Science Communication and drama

The conference is aimed at academics, artists, scientists, teachers,

researchers, writers, performers, and educationalists. It is envisaged
that the

programme will include a combination of formal papers, practical
workshops,

discussion groups and performances.

Length of presentations:

Papers: 20 mins + 10 mins for questions and discussion

Workshops: 90 to 180 mins

Proposal requirements:

* An abstract of no longer than 300 words

*   Title

* Type of presentation (paper, workshop)

*   A short biography

*   Technical requirements

*   Contact details

*   Institutional affiliation (if applicable)

Closing Date for proposals: 19 March 2004

Proposals can be submitted via post or e-mail (as a Word attachment)
to:

Michael Carklin

Postal Address: School of Humanities, Law & Social Sciences, Ty
Crawshay,
